Get everything in order.
There are a number of things you need to have set up, before even considering working with a real estate agent. Here’s a general guideline to keep in mind when you start getting everything organized:
- Have money saved for a down payment (and then some). While it’s very unlikely you’ll have enough money to pay for a house in full, it’s essential that you have money saved to make a down payment. Not only do you need money saved for the down payment, you need to have enough savings leftover for general living and emergencies as well.
- Get pre-approved for a loan. Work with a mortgage company or lender to get an approval or a pre-qualification for a loan. This will be necessary for securing the mortgage later.
- Determine your market. Consider the location and type of house you want to buy—in other words, figuring out where your sights will be set when perusing the real estate market.
One way to make this happen in terms of a resolution goes back to that timeline idea. Decide on a time when you’re going to set up an appointment with a mortgage company, or an amount that you want to have saved up by a certain date. This resolution can look like:
By __(this date)__, I will have ___________ accomplished.

Of course, buying a house or selling your home can be stressful. If there’s anything to be guaranteed in the home buying process, it’s that things won’t always go according to plan. Be proactive with this by going with the flow as much as you can, and remember that things will work themselves out. Make time for fun and relaxing throughout the process, build opportunities for relaxing, do your best, and assume that others around you are doing the same thing.
In a future blog, we’ll cover some additional ways to stay stress-free, but in the meantime, know that Ken Purtell Realty can bring the guidance you need to make your 2018 real estate resolutions happen. Get in touch with our realtors today!
